The Maharashtra government on Tuesday told the Bombay High Court that it has withdrawn its controversial circular on sedition.
Advocate General Shrihari Aney informed a division bench of Justices V.M. Kanade and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi.
In light of the government's statement, the court disposed of petitions challenging the circular filed by cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, who was arrested in 2012 on the charge of sedition under section 124 A of the Indian Penal Code for his political cartoons.The court gave Mr. Trivedi and another petitioner Narendra Sharma the liberty to file fresh pleas on the suggestions they had submitted.
Last month, the High Court had stayed the circular.
